The Knife

The knife has long been an essential tool for the outdoorsman and man kind in general. The outdoors enthusiast would never be caught without it. When you step out the door, it is the first tool in your pack or pocket, it is a sort of companion on all your great adventures. At Hook Knives we believe that companion aught to be a little part of you, a part of who you are. So let us make your dream knife to fit you.

About Our Blade Options

Welcome to Hook Knives' blades! In addition to custom ground blade designs there are several standard blade designs that I offer which I already have ground and ready for handles, you can select a blade style that you like and then choose a handle and sheath to accompany it. Read about them below.

This is my most popular option and is usually completed and shipped within 3-4 weeks.  The blade styles currently available are: The Hook Drop Point, The Hook Drop Point XS, The Caper, The Hook Trout and Bird Knife, The Finisher Dagger, and The Hook Jungle Bowie.
They are listed and discussed below, you can also peruse my gallery to see my past work, or place an order / see the inventory knives available at the Product List and Ordering page.
These knives listed are blades that I have cut, ground and on hand ready to put your choice of handles on and do finish work on. They are all made from 9CR14 which is essentially a different branding of the steel 440C and one that I have used and been very pleased with for a number of years. If you don't like something about any of that, please contact me to discuss building you a knife up from scratch with whatever steel you most prefer.

The Hook Drop Point:

Hook Drop Point
This is our primary line of blades, designed for slicing, skinning, gutting and general use. With a 3 1/2" cutting edge and 7 1/2" overall length, this knife is a classic size and design which has been carried in the packs of mountaineers, ranchers and hunters for many a year! Thin blade and smooth sleek lines make for a particularly good looking knife with your favorite handle. The blade is hollow ground and finished to a 320 even, satin finish.

Hook Drop Point XS
The Hook Drop Point XS:

The Hook Drop Point XS (Extra slim) is a modified version of our Hook Drop Point.   The hilt is removed and the finger groove moved forward to make for a sleeker design with a slightly longer working handle for its overall length.  The XS features a 3 1/2" cutting edge which has long been considered the best compromise for the hunter and outdoorsmans tool.  It is modest enough to be wieldy and uncumbersome, yet long enough to perform its general purpose duties around camp.  Like its predecessor, the XS features a  7 1/2" overall length and a 3 1/2" cutting edge with a 320 even, satin finish.

The Hook Caper:

The caper is designed specifically as a skinning knife. As the name implies, particularly for the
The Caper
intricate detail work of caping.  Its short, light overall size is very wieldy in the hand and un-cumbersome in the pack.  The blade has a deep curving cutting edge which allows more of the edge to be used while still being close to the hand for ultimate control and a longer lasting sharp edge.  With a gentle up-sweep to the tip the blade parts the hide without diving into the meat or letting the hide run up on the handle.  This allows for clean controlled cuts when parting the inside of the legs or down the abdomen.
While the Caper is intended specifically for caping, it makes a nearly ideal knife for all skinning and a very good general purpose knife.  Although small blades are often overlooked, I personally prefer this size blade to most, and use it for everything from fur bearers to big game in the field.  The Caper is a supreme companion for the trapper and hunter alike. The Caper features a 2 3/4" cutting edge and a 6 1/4" overall length with a 320, even satin finish.

The Hook Trout and Bird Knife:
The Hook Trout and Bird Knife

This knife makes the perfect little fishing knife, with a 2 3/4" cutting edge and 6" overall length it is thin, light, and handy.  When coupled with our kydex sheath (which comes standard with all knives)  it can be easily suspended from a necklace or fishing lanyard, or it also fits comfortably in your pocket! The Trout and Bird Knife is very practical and useful from day to day as a pocket knife as well as an excellent companion on the water.

The Finisher Dagger:
The Finisher is a double hollow ground dagger that can be used as a boot dagger, a general carry knife, a self defense knife and more.  This knife gets its name
The Finisher Dagger
because it was originally designed to finish the fight with large, predatory fish. whether spear fishing in salt water or trying to land large fish in a small kayak or canoe, sometimes you need to finish them off quickly and with one hand
before things get ugly.
This knife has been put to the test, from days of carry, to bouncing around in the boat, to the corrosion of saltwater where it made a great diving knife, and it has passed.  With stainless steel and rugged micarta handles, this knife is built to take it all! Combined with an innovative sheath and carry system this knife can always be safe and at a close reach, so weather its a knot that needs trimmed or a fight, you can finish it.
The Finisher Dagger
     Cutting edge length: 3 1/2"

     Overall length: 7 1/2"
The finishers sheath is uniquely designed for very versatile carry options and rugged durability. 2" belt slots allow for left or right carry from a belt, or a strap for ankle carry.  Each of the 8 rivet holes snugly fit standard parachute cord and allow for an array of customizable weaves to strap the sheath to a pack, vest, kayak, or wherever you might need to get to it quickly.
(Be sure to check your local state and city laws concerning the carry of double edge knives.)

The Hook Jungle Bowie:
The Hook Jungle Bowie
This bowie knife is designed with a bulbus shape near the tip of the blade, which shifts the weight forward, giving the blade greater inertia and more powerfull stroke for its length. This design makes for an impressive swing and lets a 13" long knife function as a machete, hacking through vines and branches. This beautiful knife design is a great camp knife and can serve a variety of functions. From chopping wood and small branches, to self defense and even skinning game, the jungle bowie is an ultimate companion. I Include with this knife mosaic pins and a custom file pattern in the
File Pattern in the Hook Jungle
Bowie
spine of the handle.
Overall length: 13 inches
Blade length: 8 inches
Finish: 400 even satin

Custom Grinds:
A few of the Damasteel patterns that
there are (unfinished).
I also enjoy designing blades with my clients and grinding just what they want, I can do hollow, flat and saber grinds and a variety of finishes and steels including spectacular Swedish Damasteel, a stainless damascus of exquisite beauty, and all sorts of stainless steels, "super" steels, and tool steels. Charge is determined on a per-project basis, but most custom grinds start at $200.00.  To learn more about exotic steel options, begin designing your knife with me, or talk about custom options, communicate with me via e-mail at davy@hook-knives.com

*Note There are so many handle options and I can only list a small fraction of them in my Handle Materials site. If you have seen a handle in my Gallery, have an idea of your own, or are interested in other handles such as KiriniteTM, micarta, glow materials, or G10, please e-mail me and I will be happy to work with you to the best of my abilities.  I also love doing extra personalized work such as using antler or bone from your deer or elk in the handle. Realize, however, that I have to take such projects one at a time and I cannot guarantee that your antler will be large enough, straight enough, or hard enough for a handle.  Again, please contact me about it.  My email is davy@hook-knives.com
